New season kicks off on Sunday
Next Sunday will see the 35th season of the Wexford Womens League kick off with a few new clubs and unfortunately the loss of a few clubs who had been in the league for many years. The most notable new entry is the arrival of Kilkenny champions East End United and will take their place in the Premier division where it is expected they will be more than competitive. Based in Bennetsbridge, East End are a long established club and have dominated women’s soccer in Kilkenny in recent years and this move to Wexford is in an effort to provide stronger opposition for their quality side. They will be replacing Tramore FC who have withdrawn from the league due to difficulty in getting players to commit to travelling to Wexford on a weekly basis. Ferns United, will of course, begin the season as hot favourites to retain their title while Adamstown, Benfica and newly promoted Killenagh Wanderers will all be eager to make their mark. Seaview United and North End United make up the rest of the division and as they have proven over the past number of years, neither team will be easy to beat.
In the lower divisions, St Cormacs and All Blacks have both returned after brief absences while Ajax Athletic have joined the league as a new team although they did have a team back in the early years.
Most teams are kicking off next weekend but it is expected that the fixture list on the following week will be very limited as several of our teams have taken up the option of a free Sunday to go support the Wexford women footballers in the All Ireland Junior final against New York.
Schoolgirls will kick off on Saturday September 27th with Under Tens, Fourteen and Eighteen
